Application-Driven Seal Development

Each custom rotary shaft seal is engineered based on defined parameters, including:

  • Shaft diameter, surface finish, and run-out
  • Rotational speed and duty cycle
  • Operating temperature range
  • Lubricant chemistry and pressure conditions
  • Environmental exposure (dust, water, contamination)

Materials & Design Expertise

KOK has extensive experience designing rotary shaft seals using a wide range of elastomer compounds and construction types, including:

  • NBR, HNBR, ACM, AEM, FKM, VMQ, XNBR
  • Single-lip, double-lip, and multi-lip configurations
  • Rubber-covered, metal-cased, and hybrid constructions

Where required, designs may reference DIN or JIS dimensional frameworks, or be developed as fully application-specific profiles.

High-Speed & Critical Operating Conditions

Our custom rotary shaft seals are developed for demanding environments, including high-speed rotating applications, with validated designs operating at speeds up to 12,000 rpm, depending on shaft diameter, lubrication, and system conditions.

KOK has supported sealing solutions for non-standard and harsh applications, including propulsion and high-speed shaft systems where combined requirements for oil retention, water exclusion, and durability apply.

These developments are typically engineered in close collaboration with OEM customers.
